Johnny Roe has been deeply involved in the thoroughbred industry for over 50 years. His knowledge of thoroughbred horse racing is second to none and it is no wonder that he has a strong reputation as a bloodstock expert, as almost 100% of the horses Johnny has sourced for racing in Hong Kong have gone on to win races. This site not only offers information regarding the purchase of Irish and other European horses, but also allows customers to privately view information on potential purchases. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any queries.
Johnny Roe began his race riding appreticeship under Seamus McGrath in Dublin, Ireland back in the early 1950s before going on to ride and train over 2,500 winners in over 20 countries.
Johnny started his senior riding career in Rhodesia (Now Zimbabwe) before returning to Ireland where he was champion jockey no less than 9 times. His time riding in Ireland included many years riding as stable jockey to top trainers Dermot Weld, Vincent O'Brien and John Oxx. With these trainers, Johnny gained enormous experience in the bloodstock industry. Johnny went on to ride with great success in Hong Kong and the US before hanging up his boots and training in Macau for five years. In total, Johnny rode over 2,500 winners in over 20 countries.
Johnny now resides in Dublin, but travels regularly to the far east where he has placed a number of top class horses, both in Hong Kong and Macau. His keen eye for talent has resulted in many successful purchases for owners and trainers the world over. He views all aspects of potential purchases from breeding, through action and conformation and suitability for the various track surfaces around the world. Although he feels strongly that Irish Bred horses still provide the cream of Europe's produce, Johnny provides horses from all over Europe to match the budgets and requirements of his owners in the US and Far East.
Despite Ireland having a population of only 4.5 million people, its reputation for consistently producing some of the world's greatest thoroughbreds is unquestionable.
The reasons for this success are numerous, but with 25,000 people working in the bloodstock industry, the excellent achievements of Irish horses overseas is set to continue long into the future.
But we shouldn't make statements like this without facts to back them up. Let's look at the 2003 season alone to measure the success of Irish horses. In this year, Irish bred horses won no less than 151 group one races in 8 different countries. These included the great Dalakhani (winner of French Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe), High Chaparral (winner of Breeders Cup) and the John Oxx Trained Alamshar (Winner of Irish Derby and King Gerorge VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes). If you think this success may have been 'one off', don't forget Rock of Gibralter who completed his seven consecutive Group 1 victories the previous season.
In the Far East, our horses have always performed particularly well at the higher classes. Just look at some of the great Hong Kong champions over the past few years and you will remember names such as Quicken Away and of course, later, the great Indigenous. More recently Irish horses River Dancer and Bowman's Crossing have hit the headlines in Hong Kong for all the right reasons.
Over the years, Johnny has brokered the sale of a number of great horses to the USA, Hong Kong, Macau, India and other countries the world over.
His breakthrough in thoroughbred sales came when he negotiated the purchase of Nor II to the USA. This horse went on to become a top five stakes winner the following year.
He has sold a number of horses to Hong and Macau including Class one horses Winning Kid and Active Bobo.
Active Bobo deserves particular mention as he was bought unraced for Macau. Johnny felt he was a special horse (even given the reasonable price) and was not disappointed when he went on to be Macau's number one horse for two seasons. He also was the first horse to be taken fron Macau to run overseas and duly ran and won a highly competitive race in Dubai.
Roe bloodstock have access to a number of top class colts and geldings for sale to Hong Kong. The Hong Kong owner generally seeks strong two or three year olds with a rating in excess of 95 and limited exposure and that's exactly where we concentrate most of our resources.
We currently have a number of these horses for sale from the UK and Ireland. Please contact us for further information.
In addition, we source a spectrum of animals for racing and stud purposes throughout SE Asia and the USA.
Don't forget that Johnny Roe has many years of experience both riding and training in the Far East and USA and understands exactly the type of horse that is required to succeed under the conditions in these areas.
In a bid to take a horse from Europe to win the American Oaks in July, Team Valor have purchased German filly, 'La Ina' in a deal brokered by Johnny Roe. This filly has shown excellent group form in Germany and France and was narrowly beaten when finishing fast in the German 1000 Guineas. La Ina is a reasonably big filly, standing at over 16hh and her breeding suggests she will stay a mile and a half.
As a two year old, La Ina showed that she could act on any surface, performing well on both soft and firm ground, but had not matured as a racehorse. When she came back as a three year old, she narrowly beat the highly rated Night Lagoon. The manner of this victory showed her to be a gutsy filly, running wide and coming late to win by the narrowest of margins.
One of the deciding factors in Team Valor's decision is the excellent value currently in high quality German bloodstock.
